On January 9, Door Community Auditorium (DCA) will present the first installments of its 2015 Distinguished Lecture and Coffeehouse Concert series. After a Saturday morning lecture about high-energy physics by Michael N. Olson, the DCA Fireside lobby will host Door County Pickers, an evening of down-home music from some of the peninsula’s favorite musicians.
Distinguished Lecture Series: High-Energy Physics
On Saturday, January 9, at 9 a.m., DCA’s Distinguished Lecture Series will offer a lecture entitled “Searching for New Physics at the High-Energy Frontier (Without Actually Going There),” presented by St. Norbert College lecturer Dr. Michael N. Olson. Nelson will discuss the Standard Model of Particle Physics and all the questions it fails to answer. For example, what is “dark matter?” Why can’t the Standard Model predict a particle’s mass? Are the current “fundamental particles” really fundamental, or are they too made up of even smaller “fundamental” particles? In discussing these and other questions, this presentation will seek to illuminate the fascinating world of high-energy physics.
Nelson’s lecture is free to the public (freewill donations accepted) and is sponsored by Dahl Law Firm and Ross Estate Planning; lodging is provided by Homestead Suites. Coffee and treats will be provided by Base Camp Coffee Shop.
Coffeehouse Concert: Door County Pickers
On Saturday, January 9 at 7 p.m., the DCA Fireside Lobby will host a concert called “Door County Pickers,” an evening of folk, bluegrass, and Americana music presented by some of the peninsula’s finest musicians.
