On Thursday, November 5, Door Community Auditorium (DCA) will present a performance by the funky roots-rock trio The Wood Brothers.
Glide Magazine says The Wood Brothers are “a well-oiled machine, yet with nary a hint of the mechanical about them…a genuinely celebratory experience.”
The Wood Brothers’ collaboration began when Oliver Wood taught his younger brother, Chris, to play the bass when the two were growing up in Colorado. Thirty years later, The Wood Brothers are still making music together, and the result is electrifying. Recently, Chris (known for his work with groundbreaking jazz trio Medeski Martin & Wood) and Oliver have joined forces with multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix to form a trio.
Together, The Wood Brothers move easily between bluesy country and swampy funk with their dialed-in harmonies, spunky acoustic guitar, virtuosic upright bass, and jangling percussion. They draw on their many timeless influences (Robert Johnson, Willie Nelson, Charles Mingus) while always staying grounded in their own fresh sound: playful and warm, with a little brotherly mischief thrown in for good measure. The Wood Brothers are touring in support of their new album, Paradise, which was released October 2 of this year.
AllMusic writes, “The Wood Brothers are hard to pin down — they play a sort of Americana version of jazz, or country with an edge, or folk with some rhythmic bite, or maybe secular gospel with a touch of swing…. [T]hey create the best blend of vernacular American roots music since The Band folded.”
The Wood Brothers’ performance is made possible by presenting sponsor Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant & Butik; major sponsors Lori and David Nicholas, Door County Brewing Company and Wisconsin Public Radio; and supporting sponsors Door County Living, FLS Banners and Young Automotive.
The Wood Brothers will perform at DCA at 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 5. Tickets for the concert range from $24 to $48. Advance reservations are recommended and can be made through the DCA box office, located at 3926 Highway 42 in Fish Creek. The box office is open Monday-Friday, 12-5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in person, on the phone at (920) 868-2728, or online at www.dcauditorium.org.
