On January 29 and 30, Door Community Auditorium (DCA) will present another installment of its 2016 lecture, concert, and film series. After a Friday evening screening of the film The Theory of Everything, DCA will present a Saturday morning lecture about Wisconsin trout streams. Saturday evening will feature a performance on the mainstage by hypnotist-comedienne Lizzy the Dream Girl. The following weekend, on February 5, DCA will present a free screening of Door County cult classic film Feed the Fish in conjunction with Fish Creek Winter Games.
Movies at the Door: The Theory of Everything
On Friday, January 29 at 7 p.m., DCA will present a free screening of The Theory of Everything, James Marsh’s 2014 biopic of the celebrated scientist Stephen Hawking. Starring Eddie Redmayne as Hawking, The Theory of Everything begins with Hawking’s early academic career at Cambridge, his romance with his future wife, Jane, and his shocking diagnosis of ALS at the age of 21. Marsh then follows Hawking’s life over the following decades, exploring the challenging and often surprising effects of ALS on both his career and his marriage.
The film screening is free to the public and is sponsored by Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant and Butik. Freewill donations are encouraged.
Distinguished Lecture Series: The Geological and Environmental History of Wisconsin Trout Streams
On Saturday, January 30 at 9 a.m., DCA’s Distinguished Lecture Series will present a lecture entitled “The Geological and Environmental History of Wisconsin Trout Streams,” delivered by Dr. Nelson R. Ham, professor of geology and environmental science at St. Norbert College. Ham will discuss Wisconsin’s rich geological heritage of cold water streams, which supported native brook trout for thousands of years after the last ice age. He will also explain the rapid destruction of this habitat by Euro-American settlers in the 1800s—why it happened and to what extent the fisheries have since recovered.
Dr. Ham’s lecture is free to the public (freewill donations accepted) and is sponsored by Dahl Law Firm and Ross Estate Planning; lodging is provided by Homestead Suites. Refreshments from Base Camp Coffee Shop will be available for purchase.
Main Stage Performance: Lizzy the Dream Girl
On Saturday, January 30 at 7 p.m., the DCA mainstage will come alive with a performance by Lizzy the Dream Girl, who explores the hilarious side of hypnosis and helps audiences discover the amazing power of the human mind. Audience members leave Lizzy’s performances having experienced the positive effects of long-term, uncontrollable laughter. Volunteers from each audience become stars of the show, giving people something to laugh and talk about long after the show is over. Lizzy’s show will be tasteful and appropriate for all ages.
Tickets to the performance are $15 or $10 for students (all tickets are general admission). The concert is sponsored by the Cordon Family Foundation; lodging is provided by Homestead Suites. Advance reservations are recommended and can be made at the DCA box office, located on Highway 42 in Fish Creek. The box office is open Monday-Friday, 12-5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in person, on the phone at (920) 868-2728, or online at www.dcauditorium.org.
Movies at the Door (Winter Games Edition): Feed the Fish
On Friday, February 5 at 7 p.m., DCA, in conjunction with Fish Creek Winter Games, will sponsor a screening of the Tony Shalhoub film Feed the Fish, which has been a favorite of Door County audiences ever since it was filmed on the peninsula in 2009. Set in Door County, Feed the Fish tells the story of Joe, a frustrated children’s-book writer in Los Angeles. To break through his writer’s block, Joe agrees to accompany his brother to Jacksonport, Wisconsin, to participate in the Polar Bear Plunge. The house where the brothers stay is isolated, and when Joe’s pal is hospitalized with a badger bite, Joe befriends a local hermit, develops a crush on the man’s granddaughter, and must deal with the local sheriff’s dislike of anyone from out of town. As Christmas approaches, things get even more complicated.
Feed the Fish stars Green Bay native Tony Shalhoub (Monk), is directed by Michael Matzdorff, and features appearances by many familiar Door County faces.
The film screening is free to the public and is sponsored by Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant and Butik. Freewill donations are encouraged.
