On Monday, August 24, Door Community Auditorium (DCA) will present a performance by buoyant roots-rockers The Jayhawks.
The Jayhawks were swimming against the tide when they first emerged from a crowded Minneapolis music scene in the 1980s. Forging a rootsy sound that wasn’t quite rock or country (“Hank Williams on speed,” somebody once called it), The Jayhawks quickly turned into one of the most important bands of the post-punk era.
American Songwriter magazine says The Jayhawks create “imaginative textures and glorious melodies…sheer, crunchy exuberance.”
Mark Olson, Gary Louris, Marc Perlman, and Norm Rogers founded The Jayhawks in 1985, creating a new musical blend that combined the elegant folk-rock of the Byrds, the adventurousness of Buffalo Springfield, and the soaring harmonies of the Beach Boys. Still touring three decades later, The Jayhawks continue to push the envelope with dynamic performances, graceful sounds, and new thematic juxtapositions, all the while retaining their unmistakable buoyancy and spirit.
Pop Matters says The Jayhawks’ sound is “as pure and effective as pop music gets…sweet tumble down harmonies…tightness and perfection.”
The Jayhawks’ performance is made possible by major sponsors Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant & Butik, 106.9 The Lodge and Tapuat Kombucha as well as supporting sponsors Wild Tomato, Arroyo Bay Grill, The Cordon Family Foundation, The Blacksmith Inn on the Shore, Peninsula Filmworks, and FLS Banners.
The Jayhawks will perform at DCA at 8 p.m. on Monday, August 24. Tickets for the concert range from $32 to $58. Advance reservations are recommended and can be made through the DCA box office, located at 3926 Highway 42 in Fish Creek.
