On Sunday, August 9, Door Community Auditorium (DCA) will present a performance by popular folk trio The Wailin’ Jennys, whose tight harmonies The Christian Science Monitor calls “impossibly beautiful…weightless.”
The Wailin’ Jennys were created in 2004 when three solo singer-songwriters teamed up for a one-time-only performance at a tiny guitar shop in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Since then, The Wailin’ Jennys have grown into one of the most beloved acts on the international folk-roots scene, each member bringing her own unique background to bear on the group’s unified folk-pop sound.
The Daily Mirror calls The Wailin’ Jennys’ sound “an intoxicating blend mixing heartbreak, cross-patterned harmonies, classical, jazz and Celtic folk. Shine on.”
In 2004, The Wailin’ Jennys released their first full-length album, 40 Days, to great critical acclaim, netting a 2005 Juno Award (Canadian Grammy) for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year. Bolstered by frequent appearances on A Prairie Home Companion, members Ruth Moody, Nicky Mehta, and Heather Masse continue to make big waves, stepping up their musical game with each critically lauded recording and thrilling audiences across the globe with their airtight three-part harmonies.
For their latest album, 2011’s Juno-winning Bright Morning Stars, The Wailin’ Jennys joined the ranks of Lucinda Williams and Emmylou Harris and recorded with award-winning producer Mark Howard. Co-produced by frequent Jennys collaborator and Juno Award-nominated David Travers-Smith, the album combines fresh and innovative sounds with the band’s signature harmonies.
The Wailin’ Jennys’ performance is made possible by major sponsor Wisconsin Public Radio, as well as supporting sponsors FLS Banners, Maxwelton Braes, Settlement Courtyard Inn and Lavender Spa, The White Gull Inn and Wild Tomato.
