Door Community Auditorium serves as a center to enrich, entertain, and challenge, through a balanced combination of performing, visual, and literary arts; and to provide opportunities for social, educational, and cultural growth.
The Door Community Auditorium is pleased and excited to present our 16th season's schedule of music, dance and song. Each year we strive to enrich and entertain through a wide variety of performance opportunities, and we feel certain you will be pleased with this summer and fall's selection of entertainment. A wonderful array of talented performers and musicians will be visiting the Door Community Auditorium in the months to come and we hope you will join us in the fun.
Our programming includes music from the British Isles, hot jazz, traditional military marches, fun folk and soulful country, big band favorites, modern dance, toe-tapping Louisiana Cajun, and smooth ballads. There certainly will be a performance to please every musical taste.
"It takes a village" could easily be the theme of the creation of a year-round community center for the arts in Door County. When ground was broken in 1990, more than 1,200 individuals, businesses, organizations, and foundations had contributed $2.7 million during a two-year fundraising campaign. The 750-seat Door Community Auditorium opened in May, 1991, and a state-of-the-art facility for the performing, visual, and literary arts was unveiled.
Celebrating our 16th season, we continue to strive to fulfill our Mission Statement. Embracing the "community," the Door Community Auditorium seeks to serve as an arts, cultural, and educational center for the entire region. Enriching, entertaining, and challenging through a balanced combination of the various arts, as well as providing opportunities for social, educational, and cultural growth, is at the heart of our Mission.
The Door Community Auditorium provides a wealth of opportunities to experience theatre, music, and dance in an acoustically excellent facility. Every seat in the "house" ensures unobstructed viewing. Past performers include Victor Borge, Harry Belafonte, the Neville Brothers, George Winston, Bob Newhart, John Prine, Debbie Reynolds, Loretta Lynn, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Willie Nelson, the Smothers Brothers, and many others.
Community Outreach and Education are vital components of the Mission of the Door Community Auditorium. Programming for adults and students include master classes, workshops, demonstrations, mini-performances, and lectures. Kaleidoscope Players provides students an opportunity to explore creativity through workshops, classes, and performance experiences.
The Link Gallery is an exhibition area which "links" the adjacent Gibraltar Schools and the Door Community Auditorium. The Mission Statement of the Gallery is to "provide a space for exhibits that explore ideas in the humanities, the creative arts, history, the sciences, the world around us, and the world beyond." Exhibits feature members of all areas of the community, endeavoring to promote learning and understanding.
Winter programming features a variety of musical performances as part of the Fireside Coffeehouse Series. Old-time folk and mountain music, bluegrass, blues, and rock are presented in the intimacy of the fireside setting. Visiting professors from St. Norbert College discuss issues of interest in the Saturday morning Distinguished Lecture Series. Guest professors have presented a wide variety of topics since the lecture series was initiated in 2004. Lecture attendees have "visited" the rainforests of Peru, explored the ethical considerations of the war in Iraq, analyzed the 2004 election returns and evaluated the geographical disaster that befell New Orleans.
The Door Community Auditorium is available for rental. Our staff is knowledgeable and can provide the necessary technical supervision and support for performances, meetings, lectures, and theatrical productions. For information on rental procedures contact Program Director Pete Evans at 920.868.2728, extension 283.
Thanks to all who have supported the Door Community Auditorium through the purchase of tickets, the gift of donations, volunteer hours, and program sponsorships. Your support of the Door Community Auditorium enables us to continue to provide a wide variety of programming from all disciplines.
The Door Community Auditorium Society is a source of funding that supports the annual operating costs and day-to-day expenses of the Auditorium. The benefits of contributing to the Auditorium Society include early preview of the summer/fall program schedule. Contributors are also invited to purchase tickets two-weeks prior to being made available to the general public. Auditorium Society members are contacted for their suggestions and recommendations for future programming.
We hope you enjoy the season and we look forward to seeing you at curtain time.
In celebration...
In
the fall of 1985, the dream of creating a community performing arts center began to take on shape and form. With the goal of providing a facility to host community events and programming, serve the needs of local children, and provide a stage for select "featured" performers, members of the community gathered together to begin feasibility discussions. Within five years the "idea" of a year 'round state-of-the-art performing arts center became a reality and ground was broken in 1990. When the Door Community Auditorium opened its doors nearly two years later, more than 1,200 individuals, businesses, organizations, and foundations had contributed $2.7 million during a two-year fundraising campaign. The 750-seat Door Community Auditorium opened in May 1991, and became the first professional multi-purpose performance space in the county. Today, the Door Community Auditorium is a multi-purpose facility presenting year round community programming. Adjacent to the Gibraltar Area Schools, students grades K 12 are provided a space to perform theatrical productions and concerts, host forensics competitions, feature guest lectures, view films, and perform graduation ceremonies. The Peninsula Music Festival comes "home" to the Auditorium each August, and countywide organizations have presented hundreds of travelogues, musical productions, and "featured" speakers during the Auditorium's brief history. The Door Community Auditorium is an achievement that reflects the time, energy, talents, and financial support of countless individuals and businesses. In celebration of our 15th anniversary, the Door Community Auditorium salutes the men, women, and children who have contributed to making a dream reality. Celebrating this very special season, the Door Community Auditorium Board and Staff continue to strive to fulfill our Mission Statement. Embracing the "community," the Door Community Auditorium seeks "to serve as an arts, cultural, and educational center for the entire region." Enriching, entertaining, and challenging through a balanced combination of the various arts, as well as providing opportunities for social, educational, and cultural growth, is at the heart of our Mission. It does "take a village," and the Door Community Auditorium is grateful for the continued commitment of ours.
