Renowned Conservation Leader Peter Forbes to Headline Celebration
at Door Community Auditorium
Vermont resident and nationally renowned land conservation leader, Peter Forbes, brings his expertise in “community conservation” to Door County when he presents the keynote address at the “One Land, Many Voices” celebration, October 4, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Door Community Auditorium, Fish Creek. “One Land, Many Voices” is a free, community event sponsored by the Door County Land Trust that also features performances by musicians Jeanne Kuhns, MaryBeth Mattson and George Sawyn; Deathfolk’s Jess Holland and Nick Hoover; and Jenny and Robin Bienemann.
“We are very excited and honored that Peter Forbes is coming to Door County to share his visionary insights on what communities need to know and do in order to ensure that land and water conservation efforts will succeed in the 21st century,” says Dan Burke, Executive Director of the Door County Land Trust. “October 4th is sure to be a very inspiring evening that we hope will lead to new and lasting partnerships as we all think about what it means to have healthy lands and a healthy community.”
As a founding member and current faculty member of the Vermont-based organization, Whole Communities, Forbes works with communities and organizations throughout the country to encourage the coming together of people from all walks of life. Forbes’ particular work with conservation organizations has largely revolved around overcoming divisions of class, race, profession and ideology to create collaborative land protection.
Forbes defines community conservation as “an act of repairing, restoring, or protecting nature that emphasizes the relationship between people and nature.” Forbes further explains, “Community conservation believes that healthy nature is central to the health of people, and the health of people is central to conserving and sustaining nature.”
Although advanced registration and seating is not required for this free, public event, people may sign up at www.DoorCountyLandTrust.org to be entered into a door prize to be drawn at the event.
In addition to headlining “One Land, Many Voices”, Forbes will also spend a day with Door County Land Trust board of directors and staff to help the organization integrate concepts of community conservation into the Land Trust’s long-range plan. The Door County Land Trust is a local, non-profit organization working to protect Door County’s exceptional lands and waters forever. The Land Trust has protected more than 7,000 acres and is supported by more than 2,500 members.
Door County Land Trust nature preserves are open to the public at no charge for hiking, cross-country skiing, wildlife observation, some forms of hunting and other low-impact, non-motorized recreational activities.
