Door County Talks About Blue Zones: Sense of Purpose with Michael Brecke

The 2026 Door County Talks Series, Sponsored by Cynthia and Tom LaConte, will explore the concept of Blue Zones, a term coined and trademarked by Author Dan Buettner. Blue Zones refers to regions in the world where people live to or beyond the age of 100 without the prevalence of degenerative aging diseases prevalent in many parts of the world.
The series, which will comprise four separate speaker events, is free, with donations gladly accepted. Attendees are encouraged but not required to watch the Netflix series, Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones, before attending the events.
Michael Brecke was born in Ashland, Wisconsin, in 1946. He grew up in Mellen, Wisconsin, and graduated from high school in 1964. Received his B.S. degree from Wisconsin State University River Falls (1968), a Master’s of Divinity from Yale University Divinity School(1971), a Master’s of Sacred Theology from Concordia Seminary (1972), St. Louis and a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago (1993).
His education also included the jobs he held at Penokee Veneer Mill, Allis Chalmers Foundry, Mellen Weekly Record, Mellen Country Club (where he dug ditches), and numerous other jobs to make enough money to support his habit of education. He has served churches in Georgia, Kansas, and right here in Door County. Over the years, he has written for newspapers and a variety of local and regional publications.
